Level the Field supports Ultimate Spirit in the Thompson-Okanagan
Creating Spaces Where Indigenous Youth Feel They Belong
Donate to the Ultimate Spirit InitiativeVancouver – October 19, 2026 – Level the Field is pleased to announce it has partnered with BC Ultimate Society to support Ultimate Spirit in the Thompson-Okanagan. Nationally, nearly 1 in 3 Indigenous families have hesitated to enroll their children in sport due to concerns about inclusion. Indigenous youth lack opportunities to take part in athletic activities. That’s not a participation problem. It’s a design problem and it is a problem that Level the Field wants to solve.

Level the Field supports initiatives that are designed to help program leaders address the broader barriers preventing people from participating, belonging, and thriving in sport and recreation. These are barriers that an individual cannot overcome on their own, like missing role models, language or cultural gaps, or disability inclusion.
Ultimate Spirit has been removing barriers since 2017. Ultimate Spirit uses the sport of Ultimate Frisbee to support Indigenous youth and communities, focusing on values like respect, connection, and shared success. Delivered by BC Ultimate Society, the Indigenous-focused program has reached more than 4,000 Indigenous participants across 27 communities in BC. It takes a holistic view of health that reflects the physical, mental, spiritual, and cultural aspects of community life. Its vision is to create transformational connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, with the sport of Ultimate as the vehicle.
Through this initiative, Level the Field will generate the learning required to create transformational connections that help shape how to back Indigenous-led sport across other communities and sports in BC. What’s proven here will be shared to help other organizations across BC build for belonging through sport.
Inequity in sport participation is a systemic issue and disproportionally affects indigenous peoples and communities; women, girls, and gender-diverse people; 2SLGBTQIA+ people; racialized people and communities; people with disabilities, people facing affordability barriers; newcomers to British Columbia, and; people facing mental health challenges. When more people can participate, communities are more connected and healthier.
